Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions from Patients and Parents at Dr. Marita Shekarian’s Paediatric Dental Clinic
How can I relieve my child’s toothache at night?
If the pain is severe, use age-appropriate acetaminophen or ibuprofen under medical advice. Applying a cold compress to the cheek may help. Avoid placing substances such as garlic or alcohol on the tooth, and visit the dentist promptly to identify the cause.
What can be done to prevent nighttime teeth grinding in children?
Underlying causes such as stress, nasal congestion, allergies, or dental misalignment should be evaluated. A calm bedtime routine and reducing stimulation before sleep can help. If tooth wear or jaw pain is present, a night guard may be recommended.
What type of toothbrush is suitable for children under 7 years old?
Choose a toothbrush with a small head, comfortable handle, soft bristles, and preferably a rounded tip. Parents should assist with brushing until around age 7.
At what age should children start using dental floss?
Flossing is needed when teeth are in close contact, usually from ages 2–3. Parents should assist with flossing until the child is about 8–10 years old.
What is the best age for fluoride therapy in children?
Fluoride therapy usually starts from around age 3, when the child can cooperate better, after dental evaluation. In high-risk children, it may be recommended earlier.
When should children start dental check-ups?
The first dental visit should take place when the first tooth erupts or no later than 12 months of age. After that, routine check-ups every six months are generally recommended.
How often do children need fluoride therapy?
It depends on the child’s risk of tooth decay. Typically, fluoride therapy is done every six months, and every three months for children at higher risk.
How can I prevent tooth staining caused by iron drops?
Administer the drops using a dropper at the back of the mouth, followed by a sip of water or gently wiping/brushing the teeth. Using a straw when possible and cleaning the teeth before bedtime are also helpful.
